The man-eating, fire-spewing Tarasque — with the head of a lion and the horns of a bull…with six legs, wings, the body of an ox, the tail of a serpent, and the strength of ten bear. It terrorized the town of Nerluc in Southern FranceThe castle and catapult of the King of Nerluc are in ruins after a vain attempt to stop the beastThe townspeople were in despair, when Saint Martha appeared. Armed only with a cross, holy water, and her faith……she tames and binds the creature, and leads it back to the townspeople.Though Saint Martha wanted to use the tameness of the Tarasque as proof of the power of faith, the frightened townspeople would not listen, and attacked it……with torches and pitchforks. The unresisting Tarasque perished. Shamed by Saint Martha, the repentant people renamed their town “Tarascon” in memory of and tribute to the beast.
